Algonquin Provincial Park

Algonquin Provincial Park is the first provincial park in Canada. It was established in 1893. The retreat of glaciers resulted in the formation of over 2,400 lakes, which can covers around 1,200 kms within the park. The park is a part of the border between Northern Ontario and Southern Ontario.

You will find a mix of coniferous forests and southern deciduous forest types. This means a wide variety of environments and a wide variety of plants and animals.

Activities for Visitors

Year long activities, 1200 campsites, fishing, mountain biking, horseback riding, cross country skiing, hiking make it the perfect getaway for you and your family. If you love to hike, the Algonquin Provincial Park has 19 trails, each with a trail guide.

Seasons

There are four seasons in Algonquin Provincial Park, Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.

Spring means fishing time and some say the very best trout. Spring brings with it a hue of colours, smells and wonderful sounds. Lakes are icy till April, so May would be the perfect time to visit.

Summer

July and August months are the most popular months. Ask the park officials about the Summer Interpretive Programs which are held in the summer.

Fall

Autumn is a wonderful time to visit the park. Autumn is great for hiking, has lots of wildlife and offers a wide array of colors to refresh your mind and soul. Fall hiking trails can be found here -> http://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/geninfo/fall.html

Winter

Skiing, snowshoeing, dogsledding are the most popular activities at Algonquin Provincial Park in the winter. If you are visiting in winter make sure you check out the various trails the park has to offer.

The Art Gallery of Ontario was founded in 1900 and has over 480,000 sq ft of physical space. As per wikepedia a group of private citizens incorporated the Art Museum of Toronto. In 1996 it was renamed to the Art Gallery of Ontario. Goldwin Smith willed the Grange, a historic Georgian Manor to the Art Gallery of Ontario. That was way back in 1910 when Goldwin Smith passed away.

The Art Gallery of Ontario has works dating back from the 1^st Century to the present day. There are around 68,000 works including:

If you are visiting the City of Dryden, you must take a break at the Aaron Provincial Park. It is the perfect Park for families. Spanning 116.7 ha in area, Aaron Provincial Park has a very rich ecological and cultural history.

Swimming, Boating and Fishing are Ideal at this park. If you are looking for hiking trails which wind through White Cedar and Aspen Forests, then you are in for a treat. The clear shallow waters of Thunder Lake, sandy beaches and playgrounds is very enticing to visitors.

Did you know Thunder Lake is a remnant of glaciers which covered the region thousands of years ago? These glaciers melted down to form a huge lake, which was named Agassiz. Agassiz in turn evaporated and left behind small lakes.

Thunder Lake is known for its beauty and makes the ideal hideaway. Wild flowers, berries, shrubs, jack pine, white cedar, balsam, surround the lake and make it a heavenly experience.

Children love the beaches with shallow water and playgrounds.

If you love boating why not spend some time on the Thunder Lake on a motorboat or sailboat?

Canoes are perfect for these waters and are great if you would like to have some fun. Make sure you decide on the canoe course in advance.

Ontario has a rich history filled with prominent events; social, political and economic. The province’s past is fascinating and holds a special place in the history of Canada as a whole. Officially Ontario became part of Canada in 1867. The years before that featured foreign occupation and power struggles while the years after have seen economic slumps and surges. Let’s have a peek into the past in this post.

The First Nations Period

Before the arrival of Europeans, the territory which is now Ontario was occupied mainly by Algonquian and Iroquoian First Nations. The term ‘First Nations’ is used to refer to the indigenous aboriginal people of Canada whose existence in the land can be traced back to the Archaic Period. Their written history began only after the arrival of Europeans and hence very little is known about their original years. But from all available accounts the native civilization progressed peacefully.

The European Era

Ontario’s proximity to the Great Lakes made it the natural focus of European explorers and navigators. In 1611, Henry Hudson became the fist European to reach the Ontario shores at Hudson Bay and claim the region for Great Britain. Shortly after, in 1613 Samuel de Champlain reached Lake Huron and heralded the establishment of French outposts in the region. The British ruled over southern Ontario in 1774 which was then part of Quebec. When Quebec was divided into two under the Constitutional Act of 1791, Ontario became Upper Canada. Finally, when Canada became a Dominion in 1867, Ontario became the largest province in the new nation.

The Early 20th Century

The early 1900s witnessed the launch of large scale industrialization in Ontario and this led to robust economic growth. In just three years from 1903 to 1906, the Ford Motor Company started to manufacture automobiles in Windsor, silver mining began at Cobalt in Northern Ontario, and the Ontario Hydro-Electric Commission was founded. Means of transport improved as the railways and roads developed and consumer goods became widely available. Agriculture also flourished and Ontario contributed almost half of Canada’s manufacturing output. The province enjoyed tremendous economic prosperity till the end of 1920s.

Slowdown During Depression

In 1928 the Great Depression arrived and a period of extreme economic slowdown started. Canada as a whole was badly hit and in Ontario, the pulp and paper industry bore the brunt of the harm. Agriculture also had its share of damage with droughts and crop failures devastating the national economy which still relied heavily on the farm sector. The result was the rapid expansion of social welfare programs by the Government to help citizens tide over this crisis time.

Economic Expansion

After the Second World War (1939–1945) the boom time was back again in Ontario. The economy expanded like never before, prosperity increased and the place became the favourite destination of immigrants from Europe. Urbanization spread across the province and the government spent money on health and education. The expansion continued in the 1960s and 70s and soon the provincial capital city Toronto became the financial centre of all of Canada.

Every year, come the month of September and Toronto becomes the focus of the film community worldwide. It is the time when the city plays host to the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), one of the most revered festivals in the world of cinema. The who’s who of the film industry will share space with the general public to witness the works of masters and newcomers alike from around the world. It’s a grand celebration of the most moving of arts and the stage where future stars make their first appearance.

About TIFF

Held every September, the festival begins on the Thursday night after Labour Day and continues for ten days. The action is centred around the Yorkville neighbourhood of downtown Toronto where 300 to 400 films are screened using approximately 23 screens. The attendance at the festival exceeds 300,000 from both the general public and industry audiences. Many studios use the Toronto Film Festival to begin their Oscar campaigns for high profile films.

The TIFF History

TIFF was founded in 1976 at the Windsor Arms Hotel. Originally named as The Festival of Festivals, it started out as a collection of the best films from other festivals around the world. Over time the event gained in stature through efficient organisation and has seen handsome investments being pumped in by numerous sponsors. Today TIFF is an indispensable component of Hollywood’s movie marketing machine.

TIFF 2009

It’s the 34th edition of the festival this year, being held from September 10-19. The ten days will see a collection of 335 films from 64 countries. These include 271 feature films out of which 71 are from first time directors. Some the North American films to watch out for this year include Get Low , Precious and The Road. Among the foreign films the most anticipated ones are Mr.Nobody, Crab Trap, Mall Girls and Nora. There is also an attractive collection of short films and documentaries that promise engaging days for the audience.

Ontario as a land of festivals is a popular destination of festival-goers both domestic and foreign. There are a wide range of events and celebrations that happen throughout the year and these attract visitors from all over the world. These festivals reflect the great cultural diversity of the province and contribute to social integration through public participation. In this post we have a look at a few of those very popular festivals.

Tulips on display at the Canadian Tulips Festival

Luminato

Luminato is an annual festival held in Toronto. A celebration of the arts, Luminato showcases Toronto’s creativity and cultural energy for 10 days in the month of June. The festival encourages local, national, and international artists to discover creative expressions through unexpected partnerships. Here creativity flourishes when cultures join together in a spirit of tolerance and respect. During the period, Toronto’s stages, streets, and public spaces are infused with theatre, dance, classical and contemporary music, film, literature, visual arts, and design.

Canadian Tulip Festival

The world’s largest festival of its kind, the Canadian Tulip Festival is a major cultural event in Ottawa. The event is held every year over a course of 18 days in May and concludes with the Victoria Day weekend. The festival focuses on promoting international friendship, the original symbolic role of the gift of tulips. Tulips of different colours are displayed all over the city and tulip bulbs of the best quality are for sale. Some 500,000 visitors attend the event annually.

Canada Day

Canada Day is the nation’s birthday and is celebrated on July 1. The day observes the events that occurred on July 1, 1867, when the British North America Act created the Canadian federal government. There are official ceremonies and parades in the national capital of Ottawa where hundreds of thousands of people celebrate with concerts, picnics, fireworks, street performances, and other activities.

Festival of the Sound

This annual music festival is held from July to August annually in Parry Sound, on the eastern shore of the scenic Georgian Bay. Lasting three weeks Festival of the Sound is a celebration of classical, contemporary, and jazz music. It features live concerts from the world’s greatest musicians and listening to them are keen audiences with refined artistic tastes. There is also the opportunity for young, upcoming talents to perform alongside their idols.

Canadian International Military Tattoo

The Canadian International Military Tattoo is an annual event held in Hamilton celebrating Canada’s rich cultural heritage. The Tattoo performances for two days, each June are based on an ancient military tradition, are 2-1/2 hours long and feature a vast array of international military and civilian acts. The tattoo aims to connect the Canadian people to the military through the elaborate exhibitions and stirring music stirring music of marching bands, pipes and drums.

Ontario has a rich history and is home to buildings and sites of great diversity and varied character. These sites have served as the staging grounds of many a landmark event in the province’s past and have been preserved well for posterity. As such, they have proved to be a favourite haunt of the tourists from all across the world. Here we profile some of Ontario’s most famous and popular historical tourist attractions.

Black Creek Pioneer Village, Toronto

Black Creek Pioneer Village lets you travel back in time to discover life in 19th-century Ontario. An entire mid-19th century village has been recreated in Toronto for kids of all ages to see first-hand. Modeled on the typical crossroads community found in the Toronto area during the 1800’s, here visitors are able to learn about history by walking through and exploring on their own. There are 40 carefully restored heritage homes, shops and gardens, each building decorated in the style of the 1860s with period furnishings. Besides the Historical Interpreters and Craftspeople that can be found housed in the restored buildings, the site also features historical reenactments and visiting artisans.

Fort Henry, Kingston

Built between 1832 and 1837, Fort Henry is both a national historic site and a museum situated in Kingston.The place has the honour of being Ontario’s first and only UNESCO World Hertiage Site. The wooden gates of his British fort, once opened welcomes the visitors into an evocative reproduction of 19th century military life. British soldiers stand at attention, cannons fire through the sky and drills are performed all day long. The site also offers guided tours, scenic views, and plays host to numerous special ceremonies and events throughout the tourist season.

Dundurn Castle, Hamilton

A National Historic Site and one of Hamilton’s most-recognized landmarks, the Dundurn Castle is a living monument. The castle gives a telltale illustration of the life and times of Sir Allan Napier MacNab, one of Canada’s first premiers. Visitors have the opportunity to discover mid-19th-century Hamilton and experience the grand country home life. Over forty rooms, above and below stairs, have been furnished to compare the life of a prominent Victorian family with that of their servants. Costumed staff guide visitors through the home, demonstrating daily life from the 1850s.

Fort William Historical Park, Thunder Bay

One of the largest history attractions in North America, Fort William Historical Park re-creates the days of the North West Company and the Canadian fur trade. The Park is recognized as one of the top ten attractions in Canada and one of the world’s most impressive historic sites. Spreading over 225 acres, across 40 buildings, Fort William presents a vivid portrait of fur trade life, ranging from culture to crafts, medicine to business, domestic life to heritage farming. There are a host of programs to engage the visitor including overnight experiences, education programs, artisan workshops, conferences, banquets, festivals and recreational opportunities.

June 2009 saw Ontario celebrating the 25th anniversary of Seniors’ Month. The occasion which is observed annually is an opportunity for all Ontarians to acknowledge the contributions made by seniors every day in communities across the province. This is also the time when we pause to recognize the difference our elders make in society and work to build awareness on their special needs. Seniors’ Month events include award ceremonies, recognition events, socials and senior’s information fairs which are held throughout the province.

Focus on Age-Friendly Communities

Every year there is a specific theme to the celebration and this year’s theme was “Creating Age Friendly Communities.” The whole idea is to provide a better standard of living to the aged and involve them in the social mainstream. Our elders have lots to offer for society and with their experience can prove to be a beacon inspiration for other generations. Seniors currently make up approximately 13% of Ontario’s population and it is expected that their number will almost double to 3.5 million in the next 20 to 25 years. Considering this fact, the theme for this year is very relevant.

How Communities Can Help

Age-friendly communities can greatly contribute to the welfare of seniors. Through wellness programs and other social events, they allow seniors to participate in daily life. They also help the elderly to stay healthy and active by means of recreational programs. And it’s not just the seniors who will benefit from such communities. Making public spaces cleaner, more accessible and safer improves the quality of life for everyone. Creating and sustaining such communities will play an important part in building a stronger future for all Ontarians.

What the Government Is Doing

The provincial Government is helping to build an age-friendly Ontario by providing seniors with more opportunities to stay active, healthy and involved in their communities. The province has already implemented Canada’s first provincial elder abuse strategy. It is also investing more than $1.2 million to expand its Elderly Persons Centres program, which supports the maintenance, operations and programming of senior centres across the province. And as part of the Seniors’ Month celebrations, age-friendly community forums are being organized in major cities across the province. These forums aim to steer province wide programs that support and enable local leaders to recognize the benefits of developing an age-friendly strategy. Emblems hold a special significance for any land, be it a nation or a province. They are an integral part of the identity of the land and looms large in the collective consciousness of its people. They are indeed vehicles of thought and instruments of communication. When you see a maple leaf you the first thought that comes is of Canada for the two are strongly imprinted on the minds and hearts of people all over.

Provincial Emblems

Ontario has its own enduring emblems that epitomises the history, plant and animal life, geographical setting and sovereign existence of the province. These are symbols that Ontarians are passionate about and which evoke feelings of admiration in their minds. Let’s have a look at them.

Ontario's Official Flag

The Red Ensign is the flag of Ontario. It includes the Union Jack representing Ontario’s historical ties to Great Britain in the upper left corner, and the provincial Coat-of-Arms on the right side in the middle. It was the Flag Act proclaimed by the Ontario Legislature on May 21, 1965 that declared the requirements of the flag design

The Coat-of-Arms consists of a green shield with three golden maple leaves surmounted by the Banner of St. George, a red cross on a silver background. The banner indicates Ontario’s close ties with Britain, while green and gold are Ontario’s official colours; green symbolizes the land. Above the shield is a bear, with a moose and a deer supporting the shield. And below the moose, the shield and the deer, there is a banner with the Latin motto translated as "Loyal She Began, Loyal She Remains."

White Trillium

The official flower of Ontario is the white trillium (Trillium grandiflorum), a delicate three-petalled flower that grows abundantly in the wild woodlands of the province in early spring. It was the Floral Emblem Act of 1937 that made the declaration.

Amethyst

Official Gem

The Mineral Emblem Act adopted in 1975 by the Ontario Legislature proclaimed Amethyst the official gem of Ontario. The rich purple semi-precious stone is found in large deposits in areas surrounding Bancroft, North Bay and Thunder Bay.

Eastern White Pine

Official Tree

The Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus Linnaeus) was made Ontario’s official tree by the Arboreal Emblem Act of 1984. The tree was an important source of income and trade during days of early settlement, and continues to be a valuable resource for Ontario today.

Common Loon

Official Bird

The Common Loon (Gavia immer) was adopted as Ontario’s official bird by the Avian Emblem Act on June 23, 1994. The bird can be commonly found swimming or nesting on or around many of the lakes and rivers in the province.
